Your Log Home Questions, Answered

From design details to care tips for log homes, gazebos, ranch entrances, hand railings, and furniture—we’re here to simplify your journey. Find clarity, confidence, and expert guidance below. ✨

Where do your logs come from?
Utah, Idaho and Montana
Do you use live trees?
No we use Dead Standing Trees. These are trees that are killed by bark beetles or fire.
Is there a limit to how big my log home can be?
No. You can build a small hunting cabin or a large home getaway.
Are log homes likely to withstand earthquakes?
As far as we know, there is no jurisdiction anywhere in America that does not allow log homes to be built because of earthquake concerns. When a log home is built correctly it can withstand the biggest earthquake, and pass the most stringent building permit issuance process.
How much settling is involved in log walls?
Because we use dead standing material, minimal setting occurs. We recommend half a inch gap above windows, three quarters to an inch gap for an interior wall.
What kind of roof would be best on a log home or log cabin?
To a large extent, this is a matter of personal taste. In the past, most log home builders preferred to use shake or shingle roofs. However, metal roofs are the standard these days. Personally, we prefer a metal roof because on the average they are stronger, they last longer, they are less expensive than cedar shakes, and they are easier and faster to apply.
Is it possible to purchase logs inexpensively?
Yes. The main factor that affects log pricing is location of the logs. Logs can be collected from local mountains, thus cutting shipping costs.
Is it possible to borrow money from a bank to build a log home?
Yes.
How many years will a log home last?
If it is built WRONG, then it can last as little as five years. On the other hand, if it is built RIGHT then it can last for hundreds of years.
Do log homes insulate well?
Yes. As with any home, you must add insulation to your roof and to your floor for energy efficiency. The walls do not need added insulation because logs are usually pretty thick and insulate well on their own.
How much physical strength is required to build a log home?
Hardly any.
How many people does it take to build a log home?
One person, working alone, can build a log home, but we would not recommend it. Most sites operate efficiently with a crew of four.
How much will a “kit” log home cost?
Our kits range from $30-$50 a square foot depending on the completeness of the kit and the diameter of log used.
How much time does it take to build a log home?
Normally a kit is erected in a six month building cycle but could take years depending on how many people are working on it.
Can the average person with no building experience build a log home with no help from anyone?
Yes. The average person can build a log home even if they have no prior building experience.
